Turkey Sliders with Caramelized Bacon
I love burgers so much! A few years ago while I was staying with my grandmother, I gave up burgers for Lent. The other day while talking with my grandmother, she asked me if I gave up burgers again this year. I told her I didn't and she said she was glad because she knew that I "suffered so" when I gave them up. It really was a big sacrifice for me!
What is it about sliders that I find so appealing? With sliders, you get more bread (always a plus) and more delicious toppings per serving. Nothing to complain about here! Plus, you can pop a few in your mouth and not feel a bit guilty. They are so small afterall! I used turkey in these sliders to balance out the decadence of the caramelized bacon. You could definitely substitute beef if you want. If you do use beef, use a little less salt than the recipe below calls for.
with caramelized bacon
4 slices thick cut bacon, cut in half
1/2 cup light brown sugar
2 teaspoons pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For the Burgers
1 pound ground turkey
1/2 red onion, minced
1 tablespoon Italian flat-leaf parsley, minced
2/3 cup panko bread crumbs
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 avocado, sliced
Good quality blue cheese (I used Point Reyes), sliced
8 slider sized burger buns, cut in half and toasted
For caramelized bacon
Preheat oven to 375°F. Place the sliced bacon on a foil-lined baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, pepper, and maple syrup. Mix with a fork until evenly moist. Spoon mixture on top of each slice of bacon, using all of the mixture. Bake for 25 minutes or until bacon looks crisp. Watch closely around the 23 minute mark to make sure the bacon doesn't burn!
For the burgers
Combine all burger ingredients into a medium bowl and mix with your hands. Divide into 8 equal pieces and form into small patties. Grill on your barbecue to your liking. Set patties aside while you toast the buns. To assemble the burgers, top the patty with the cheese, avocado, and then bacon. Cover with the top bun and stick a bamboo skewer through the whole slider to keep it together. Serve and enjoy!
