Blackberry Lemonade with Mint & Basil

One of the things I miss most about living in California are the citrus and avocado groves all over the place. Almost every house we pass on our daily walks here in Santa Barbara have at least one citrus or avocado tree in their yard.

My great-grandmother has the best avocado tree in her backyard. It gives off the very best tasting avocados you could ever eat! My grandparents have a tangerine, a lemon, and a lime tree in their backyard and my mom has a lemon tree in hers.

There is something so special about eating fruit straight off the tree. When we get oranges from family friends, the peel is so thin and there is very little pith and they are the sweetest tasting oranges ever. One bite and you will be turned off of the grocery store variety for life!

Last weekend while my siblings were up visiting Lucia and I, my sister and I decided to make some fresh lemonade. We had some leftover blackberries from Saturday Scones so we decided to add them in too. I added some fresh basil and mint to really put the lemonade over the top! This drink is perfect for sipping while sitting in a hammock and reading a good library book.... which is exactly what I've been doing during Lucia's naps : )

Blackberry Lemonade

with mint & basil

8 small lemons

8 cups water

1/4 cup sugar (or more depending on how sweet you want your lemonade)

pint of fresh blackberries (save some for garnish)

small handful fresh mint

small handful fresh basil

Squeeze the juice from all the lemons and place in a cup or small bowl. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Add the blackberries, mint, and basil. Muddle with a muddler or spoon until the herbs are in small pieces and the juice has turned a nice shade of purple from the blackberries. Add the lemon mixture to a large pitcher and then pour in the water. Stir and taste sweetness (adding more sugar as needed). Fill in the pitcher with ice. Serve with a few blackberries at the bottom of the glass and a sprig of mint for garnish.

Lemons straight from mom's tree. Perfectly imperfect

Add this much mint

And this much basil

Muddle everything together.... so glad to have your help little sis!
